3 Reasons to try Faux Calligraphy

With all the hype around Calligraphy & Lettering, I wanted to highlight 3 Advantages to Creating Faux Calligraphy.

First off, Faux Calligraphy is a way of creating letters so that they look like they have been created in Calligraphy. Calligraphy is a way of writing that typically consists of letters that have thin upstrokes & thicker downstrokes. In Calligraphy this is achieved by using a special tool…either a dip pen & nib or a brush (paint or marker).

While Calligraphy is an amazing skill to learn I want to make sure you do not discount the awesome advantages of Faux Calligraphy.

1. The Accessibility of Faux Calligraphy

In many ways, Faux Calligraphy is more accessible than Calligraphy. In terms of supplies needed you don’t really need anything “special” to create Faux Calligraphy. All you need is a writing implement with a rigid tip; like a pencil, pen, or marker. Also, no special paper is required as in Calligraphy.

There have been several times at my day job when my calligraphy skills have been requested to personalize a card STAT…ha ha, I’m an OR nurse! Since I don’t keep a dip pen & ink in my locker I’m able to use my Faux Calligraphy skills in a pinch with just a regular marker. 

In terms of cost of supplies unless you are creating faux calligraphy on surfaces other than paper it is also less expensive to use a regular marker in Faux than a brush tip marker or dip pen & ink in Calligraphy. 

And, as far as learning goes Faux is a skill that can be mastered much quicker than traditional dip pen & ink or brush tip Calligraphy.

   2. The “No Smudge” Factor

If you have a look at the envelopes addressed below they look almost identical. However, the one on the left was done in traditional dip pen & ink calligraphy while the one on the right was done using a felt tip marker. 

Now have a look at this photo. As you can see the ink is smudged. I accidentally brushed something up against it before it was completely dry. It typically takes a few hours for calligraphy ink to dry whereas a marker on paper dries almost instantly.

3. Go Big or Go Home!

For me, one of the Biggest Advantages to Faux Calligraphy is that it can be created on a much larger scale than a dip pen & brush marker. This gives you the opportunity to create beautiful lettering just about anywhere. Have a look at a couple of places where I have used my Faux skills to create a little beauty.
